Europe Bill vital step but progressive voters will demand more

The government's bill to hasten alignment with Europe is a necessary step but won't go far enough to generate the transformative economic growth the UK desperately needs, campaigners have stressed.

As part of today's King's speech, the government committed to introducing the European Partnership Bill in an effort to strengthen ties with the EU.

Ahead of the UK-EU Summit this summer, closer ties with the EU can help rebuild trade with Europe post-Brexit, as Best for Britain has called for in our latest report.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, said:

“This Bill will be filed under ‘necessary but insufficient’: it's essential to hasten alignment with our largest market that will enable more frictionless trade, but won’t go nearly far enough to generate the transformative economic growth or voter support this government desperately needs.

“As our latest research shows, with progressive voters making it crystal clear they would reward parties who advocate for the UK’s renewed EU membership, the government - under this or any future leader - should be under no illusions that they will have to do much more to galvanise their support.”
